Industrial Hygiene is among the most significant components of worker health and safety in modern employment sectors. Its purpose is to assess, manage, and eliminate or remediate environmental health and safety risks to employees that could adversely affect them during the regular course of work. Left unaddressed, these types of exposure can lead to both chronic ailments and decreased productivity. Therefore, industrial hygiene monitoring has become valuable, enabling organisations to identify workplace hazards before employee exposure and maintain appropriate safety measures.

In addition, given a fully enclosed work space, the pollution emitted from industrial sources may accumulate over time at levels that are unsafe for a worker to inhale.


Air quality monitoring allows us to quantify the amount of hazardous substances in the atmosphere of an industrial work setting. Various monitoring devices are used to sample various forms of airborne contaminants (i.e., particulate matter, chemical vapours, or toxic gases). 


The data collected provides a means for organisations to evaluate whether worker exposures are within acceptable limits set by regulatory authorities.

The first step in industrial hygiene is the recognition of possible hazards in the workplace. The type of hazard varies based on the type of industry and work being done. 


One of the most significant hazards posed to workers daily is that of exposure to toxic hazmat. A worker will often find themselves exposed to fumes, dust, vapors, solvents, or other hazardous liquid materials during their daily work practices. Workers who are continually exposed to hazardous material may develop chronic health issues (i.e., respiratory, irritations to skin, etc.) 


To mitigate risks in the workplace and protect the general safety and health of employees in the future, organizations must implement regular inspection protocols, institute training programs, conduct environmental assessments, and utilize Industrial hygiene monitoring for industrial hygiene purposes.
